Update on “.icp” name claiming campaign

Since the campaign launched on Feb 1, a total of 1268 “ .icp” names have been claimed, more than 5K ME accounts created, and more than 2K NNS wallets linked to users’ ME accounts.

The “.icp” name claim campaign was designed to provide names for free with different rarities for the ICP community. The user’s NNS wallet Voting Power is used to determine claiming privileges. Users are thus required to sign up ME and use ME to sign in Internet Identity (II) to link to their NNS wallet to query staking data to calculate Voting Power.

There are some questions from the community concerning the new usage pattern of Internet Identity’s security model granting users’ NNS wallet access to a canister DApp.

We have responded to these questions on the Dfinity Develop Forum and plan to publish more technical details and our design choices under our future roadmap. Given the considerations, we have decided to end the “.icp” name claiming campaign for now.

What’s Next:

  • The “.icp” names that have been claimed are unaffected and can be managed within the ME account. For future usage, please refer to IC Naming’s mainnet launch.
  • Unclaimed names will be reserved for AstroX’s future airdrop. We will relaunch a new name claiming campaign to distribute the remaining “.icp” names in the near future.
  • ME’s basic functionalities will remain the same. Users can sign up ME and link to a new or existing II/NNS. We encourage community members to try out ME and provide us feedback.
  • The AstroX team will continue to work with the Dfinity II team and developers in the community for building a secure DApp. For anyone interested, please join the conversation at https://forum.dfinity.org/t/internet-identity-astrox/10619/12 or our Discord channel.
